OCEANIA
Species native to Oceania have become difficult to differentiate from many of the introduced
species. Many of the well established species were, undoubtedly, brought with man as he
populated the islands throughout the pacific thousands of years ago and not considered to be
endemic (Bambusa bambos and Bambusa vulgaris are two outstanding examples). Some
species have also been introduced recently as either ornamental specimens or as improved
specimens to the native selection. Regardless of the reasons for the arrival of so many species,
the ideal climate most of this area provides has proved to be a haven for tropical species of the
Bambusea family.
