Although there are fossil records of bamboos which may have survived in this region
of Africa, there is only 1 living species currently known to be native to the area.
Thamnocalamus tessellatus from the Thamnocalaminae subtribe was used as arrow
shafts, spear handles and shield construction by native tribes.
