While tropical Africa seems to have ideal conditions for bamboo and its diversity, only 4
species are currently recognized as being native to this region. This is in direct
contrast with neighboring Madagascar which holds 36 native species in an area much
smaller than that found in tropical Africa. Some experts have suggested that there may
be many more species yet to be identified. There have been many non-native species
introduced, which may make identifying new, native species more difficult.
