Scientific and Thai Names of Bamboo
AUSTRALIA & PACIFIC ISLANDS
Australia and the Pacific Islands

New Zealand, Southern Australia and Western Australia contain no native bamboos.  Northern
Australia, surprisingly, only holds three species which have been classified as being native to that
region.  New Guinea, Micronesia, Polynesia, and Melanesia are home to a considerably larger
population; 39 species.  Taxonomists have found it very difficult to determine which bamboos have
been introduced, when and by whom.
