South America
Most people are quite surprised to learn that there are over 500 known species (approximately 70 yet not
named) of bamboo in South America.  Because of the remoteness of many locations and the lack of
trained taxonomists working with bamboo, it is expected that many more species will be discovered in the
future.  The Americas represent a different group of bamboos from the old world.  They are all
categorized within three Sub-tribes; Guaduinae, Chusqueinae, and Arthrostylidiinae.  These Sub-tribes are
only found in the New World and none of the genera of these Sub-tribes are endemic to any other
continent.
