Bamboo Species
Scientific Name
Dendrocalamus brandisii
Common Name
Pai bong yai
Dendrocalamus brandisii is a beautiful species which is said to be the tallest bamboo in
the world at 35 meters. It is a tropical, sympodial bamboo. This species likes cooler
climates with higher elevations and plenty of water for full growth. Its culms can reach a
diameter of more than 20cm with walls that are very thick at 2.5cm to 4 cm. Very
similar to Dendrocalamus giganteus, it can be distinguished by a lighter culm color
when mature as well as smaller spikelets and [possibly] thicker culm walls. Used
principally for crafts, furniture, construction and occasionally as a vegtable.
