Bamboo Species
Scientific Name
Bambusa blumeana
Common Name
Pai Si suk
Bambusa blumeana is a very useful species of the Bambusa genus. It is believed to
have originated in Indonesia. It is a tropical, sympodial species with spiny branches
covering the lower 1 to 2 meters of the base. It can reach heights up to 25 meters
and has variable culm diameters [10cm. - 20cm.] and wall thicknesses [.5cm -
3cm.]The culms are similar but smaller than those found in Bambusa bambos. An
easy way to distinguish the two species is by comparing auricles on culm sheaths.
This specie has easily identified auricles with bristly hairs. The other does not
appear auricle-like, but instead seem to be elongated extensions of the base on
either side. This bamboo seems to have a very promising future in almost every
known application.
